Avignon, Chateauneuf du Pape, Le Roussillon, The route de La Lavande

The top 5 Reasons to go.

Avignon, the walled town.

Avignon, the walled town.

Narrow streets in Avignon.....

Narrow streets in Avignon…..

The walled city of Avignon: While most exciting in July, the theater festival at the Palais  des Papes, Avignon is surprisingly youthful and vibrant year around.

Chateauneuf- du- Pape: Probably the most evocative Cotes du Rhone vineyard but just one of many villages in this area where you can sample exceptional wines.

Lavender: Get hip-deep in purple by touring the Lavender Route between l’Abbaye de Senanque ( near Gordes) and the historic town of Sault.

The high life. Experience the Luberon’s mountaintop villages perches, set in a patchwork landscape right out of a medieval book of hours.

Seeing red in the Roussillon: With its  ocher cliffs that changes tones – copper, pink, rust – depending on the time of day, this town is a gigantic ruby embedded in the Vaucluse bedrock. The legend has it that the wife of a nobleman threw herself from the top of the cliffs after her husband forced her to eat her dead lover’s heart. The earth turned scarlet red with her blood, and rocks and villages were left with a permanent rosy glow.

bouillabaisse, Drivers, Foraging wine tasting picnics, local chef, Marseille, Thanksgiving 2015, tour guides, tour package, truffle hunting

No plans for the thanksgiving holiday? why don’t you join us, if you are single or with that special someone , or want to have a few family members come along, sign up with us and enjoy a great week in Provence. We changed villa and decided on another 5-star property located in the village of Saint Saturnin-les-Apt.

About the village of Saint-Saturnin

The village is nestled along the base of a long , low cliff, with the ruins of a castle above on the high end and an old windmill on the opposite end . Behind the cliffs above the village is a ravine that has been dammed( by the barrage) to form a very nice little lake. The lake is formed from rainwater collected from the slopes of the plateau de Vaucluse that rise behind the village, and actually was used for the local water supply.

St.Saturnin is an authentic medieval village with no much touristic attractions, although it has a couple of hotels and is a very popular base for hiking up onto the Plateau de Vaucluse. A few main streets run through the village parallel to the hills, lined by a row of connected medieval houses, and many little cross streets pass through low vaulted passages beneath the houses. At one end of the village you will notice a street that passes out through the remains of 11th-century walls to the ruins of a massive defensive castle on the high end of the cliffs.

The Eglise St-Etienne was built in 1860 to replace the Romanesque church at the same site. Inside there is a wooden statue of the Virgin and child ( Le tresor de Saint-Etienne) and a few paintings from the 16th-century. The church has a six-bell carillon.

La Chapelle Castrale Saint Saturnin was concecrated in the middle of the 11th-century, making it one of the oldest around. It was enlarged in the beginning of the 18th-century.

If you do an overnight, there are  two-star hotels, restaurants, cafes and alimentation ( Food) shops provide for visitors and hikers. You can find ” Topo guides” and hiking maps for the region at the Cafe des voyageurs. http://www.saintsaturninlesapt.fr

Galerie Blanchard, La Bastide de Tourtour ( Hotel), Resturant Les Chenes verts, Tourtour in Le Var

Where to stay and eat

La Bastide de Tourtour is a 25-room hotel located just outside of town. The hotel occupies a stone building built in 1965 ( The only disappointing thing about it). The hotel’s best features are the sweeping view over the surrounding pine forests.  To take full advantage of it choose one of the ” prestige” rooms, they face south and they have balconies. They are best because they are on the second floor. Intersection of D31 and D77; 4-94-70-57-30. http://www.bastidetourtour.com

Les Chenes verts

Paul Bajade is the chef and has a 20- year reputation creates wonders. His cuisine is dense, earthy and exhilarating. If you happen to eat there, look for the seven- course truffle menu. ( Route Villecroze; 4-94-70-55-06). http://www.leschenesverts.fr/ One Michelin star; The food is outstanding.

La Galerie Blanchard

“My wife is the creative type. I am just the worker”. His wife, Vivianne is the designer of the bold jewelry in steel, iron and precious wood on display and for sale, Gilles , her husband, who conceives and welds together the exuberant pieces. Gilles, Paris born and trained moved south in 1972. Birds have always been a special subject- He is particularly drawn to the idea of taking to the air and flying away. This gallery has an amazing amount of great work!. Open Easter through October; other times by appointment. Place de La Trinite, Tourtour. http://www.galerieblanchard.com

Frejus, Gorges du Verdon, Hostellerie de l'Abbaye de La Celle, Hotel du Soleil, La Bastide de Moustiers, Le couvent des Minimes, Le Haut Pave, le Var, Saint Raphael, St tropez

The Var’s rocky outcrops, mountain brooklets, very dense forests, luscious vineyards, undulating hills and beaches with bronzing bodies, make for patchwork of a landscape, no two areas look alike or offer the same attractions. The Var is actually home to

some of the cote d’Azur’s most famous port towns – St Tropez, St Raphael and Frejus. If you ever get tired of seaside frivolity head out north to the mountains of Haute Provence, where the chocolate-box capital of faience pottery, Moustiers Sainte-Marie, provides a dramatic getaway to the beautiful Gorges du Verdon and ever -rolling lavender fields and olive groves.

Where to stay and dine

L’Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de la Celle

Alain Ducasse   manages the restaurant  in this 18th-century Benedictine abbey turned – country inn. The chef Benoit Witz’s Provencal cuisine earned a Michelin star in 2006 and the verdant gardens contain 80 varieties of wine. ( 10 place du General de Gaulle, 83170) http://www.abbaye-celle.com

Hotel du Soleil, Hyeres

The decor is old- fashioned but the welcome is warm, the location is central ( in the old town), Wi-Fi is free and the rates are pretty reasonable. ( Rue du Rampart) http://www.hoteldusoleil.com

Le couvent des Minimes, Mane

Set in a formal Medieval convent, this very chic hotel has sumptuous rooms, two excellent restaurants frequented by the locals, and the world’s first Occitane spa. Mane 04300. http://www.couventdesminimes-hotelspa.com

La Bastide de Moustiers

The country setting of this Auberge is absolutely gorgeous. Service is a five- star, the rooms are very comfortable and the cuisine created by Alain Souliac, one of Ducasse’s protege is deeply satisfying. ( Chemin de Quinson, 04360, Moustiers-Sainte Marie) http://www.bastide-moustiers.com

A great place to eat in Hyeres, Le Haut du Pave

The fish was perfectly cooked, Provencal specialties, fine wine, medieval vaults and very friendly service, one of the best places to eat in Hyeres. (Place Massillon) 04-94-35-20-98
